Competency 00I: The ESL teacher understands fundamental language concepts and knows the structure and conventions of the English language

NATURE AND BASICS OF LANGUAGE

Learning a second language involves learning of words, pieces of words, sounds, how words are put together into a sentence, how sentences create a paragraph, the meaning of words, both literal and figurative, and intonation patterns. The user of the language also needs to know the rules for using social language, body language, and taking turns when speaking.  Languages have unique discourse styles because ways of thinking are not the same from one language and culture to another. Some discourse styles are more inferential, others more direct.

STRUCTURE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

An ESL teacher needs to be aware of the English language components. Find the concepts of language system descriptions in Competency 001 Power Point below.
