Course Description
Chemistry is an integral part of our lives and the world we live in. Chemistry explains the world around us. Are you a college student intimidated by a chemistry course? Do you need a head start in exploring chemistry in order to be prepared for general chemistry courses?
In this four-week non-credit pre-college online course, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of Chemistry. Concepts, terminologies and basic mathematics skills required for conversions in Chemistry will be covered. In addition, students will explore career opportunities in the area of Chemistry. This basic Chemistry course is recommended for McHenry County College’s students prior to enrolling in CHM164: Introductory Chemistry.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Define the study of Chemistry
- Discuss the importance of Chemistry and its role in all aspects of life
- Describe essential safety rules and processes in a Chemistry laboratory
- Explain basic chemistry concepts and terminologies
- Explore the periodic table, its elements, periods and groups
- Perform basic conversions using mathematics skills
- Identify the main chemistry disciplines
- Explore career opportunities in chemistry and related fields
Expectations of the Student
- Time Commitment: Students are expected to spend at least 3 hours per week on this course to complete all activities.
- Technical Requirements: Students should have access to a computer with Internet access
Grading
The quizzes in this course will be auto-graded and you can retake the quizzes to improve your score. Discussions in this course will be optional and will not be graded. However, students will receive periodic feedback from the instructor. To successfully complete this course, a student needs to score at least 80% on the quizzes
