Walters’ Eighth Grade Language Arts Procedures and Routines

 

       After we have discussed a procedure, please put a check in the left margin next to that procedure. By placing a check, you are indicating that we have gone over that procedure and you understand and will follow the procedure. You are expected to apply these procedures for the entire school year. Failure to do so will result in consequences.

 

____1. Entering the classroom: Enter the classroom prepared with all your supplies and in an orderly fashion.

 

____2. Bell Ringer (Noredink.com/writing prompt): After entering the classroom, take your seat, and complete the tasks on the Promethean Board.

 

____3. DEAR Time- You may read a library book or at times we read a book as a class. I will be asking you about your reading and your responses will be recorded in your journal/folder. Reading is the only thing you may do! Please refrain from talking during D.E.A.R. Any questions you may have will be answered after this time is up.

_____4. Good Thinks- We will share 3-5 good things.

 

_____5 Lesson: The teacher will teach a skill for approximately 15 minutes. All skills will be in your Erwin for reference to reinforce the learning process.

 

____6. Daily Assignments: Once an assignment is explained, begin working on it immediately and continue to do so until the time allotted has expired. If you are talking instead of working, I will remain you of the class social contract.

___7 Stations: You will have weekly assignments in your bins to complete.

1) Vocabulary 2) Grammar 3) Writing Assignment 4) Small Group

____7. Tardy: You need to be in your assigned seat before the tardy bell rings. Your teacher takes attendance immediately following the bell. If you come to class late, without a pass, you will sign the Tardy Record and complete a Tardy Standard.

 

____8. Coming to Attention: When your teacher needs your attention, she will give you the time out signal. At this time, you will put up the same signal.

 

____9. Missing supplies: You are expected to bring all required supplies to class    everyday. If you forget your supplies, ask a friend or you may purchase supplies with Dojo points.

 

____10. Make-up Work: You are expected to check your group’s bin for missed work when you return to class and ask a responsible friend for clarification or Mrs. Walters during station time.

 

____11. Asking a question: To ask a question, silently raise your hand. Wait patiently and quietly until your teacher calls on you or comes to your seat. (Dojo point)

 

_____12. Trash and Pencil Sharpening: As a general rule, you should sharpen your pencil before the bell rings. The next time you have permission to sharpen your pencil is before station time. Trash will be thrown away at the end of class. (Dojo point)

 

_____13. Nurse/Restroom/Office: When you need to leave the room, wait until the teacher has completely given instructions. Then, raise your hand and ask permission to go to the nurse, restroom, or office. If it is a medical emergency,          please interrupt her. You must have Dojo points in order to go to the restroom.

 

_____14. Handing in Work: All work will be passed to the designated person who will collect all papers and place them in the white drawers.

 

_____15. Test Procedures: You will be tested after your teacher has provided ample time for you to master the skill. Also, we will have a weekly vocabulary quiz . The words will be given to you every Friday. After all students have taken the test, the words will be displayed on the Word Wall.

 

_____16. Paper Headings: Your heading includes your FULL NAME, DATE, and the CLASS PERIOD. It goes in the UPPER RIGHT CORNER of your paper. You should make a habit of putting your heading on your paper before you begin working.

 

____17. Social Contract: Our class is responsible for creating a social contract, and we will follow it. If anyone breaks the classroom agreement, he or she will lose 1-5 Dojo points initially.

 

____18. When a school-wide announcement is made: Stop what you’re doing and pay attention to the announcements.

 

____19. Early Finishers: If you complete all of your work, do homework, read, or select an activity from the choice board.

 

___20. End of Class: Pick up all papers and scraps around your immediate area to leave the room clean. When the room is clean, your teacher will Launch the class with a quote or motivational video.

 

____21. Dividers: Organization is extremely important; it is one factor that determines success. Divider 1: Vocabulary 2: Assignments

 

___22. Writing Portfolio: Your writing will be placed in a folder. This will allow you to see how much you improve throughout the year.

 

___23. Walking as a Class: Our class will walk in a single file line when we leave the room. Be sure to leave space behind the person in front of you. No talking will be tolerated or we will return to the classroom.

 

___24. Responding to an emergency drill (fire, tornado, and shelter in place): If the alarm sounds, then you will immediately listen to your teacher’s instructions. Fire: Silently and in a single file, you will leave the classroom and walk out of the building to the designated area. You will remain in single file while the takes attendance. Remain silent until it’s clear then return to class. Tornado: You will leave quietly in a line and move to designated area. Once informed, you will return to the classroom. Shelter Place: Move to the corner at the back of the room, and sit on the floor without talking until notified.

Good behavior pays and violations cost.

Examples of good behavior are, but not limited to: participation during class discussions, class helpers, positive attitude, on time and prepared for class, improvement on assignments/tests, etc. Dojo Points will be given out randomly and at the teacher’s discretion.

 

At the end of 3rd,6th and 9th  week, we will have an auction and students can purchase things with the classroom dollars.

 

As long as a student is in good standing, he/she may bring in items for the auction, and they will be paid in Dojo points.

As long as you have Dojo points, you can pay for a violation. However, when you are in the negative by 10 Dojo points, you will be assigned detention and a phone call will be made to inform your parents of the behavior. During this time, the student will not be able to earn Dojo points until the detention is served. If problems persists, I will make a home visit or a write the individual a referral.

**My signature indicates that I choose to and will follow all procedures and expectations for this class. If I violate the procedures or expectations, then I accept the consequences for my choices.
