Course Description:

Students will complete six (6) reading, writing, and speaking units in order to prepare for life after high school graduation. This course provides students with the skills needed to be successful in a business organization. Students will study common business correspondence, including the correct form and use of business applications. Reading and writing of business documents, such as routine letters and emails, specialized letters, and resumés and cover letters, and college and career preparation will be emphasized. Students will develop skills in the practical principles of grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary needed in business transactions. They will also gain skill in and practice speaking, listening, and communicating nonverbally in a business environment. My goal is to foster a culture in which students can gain an interest in a career and success-driven mindset that will carry them beyond the classroom and throughout their life.

Classroom procedures:

During the three-week semester students will work as a class, in pairs, or independently as the assignment dictates. Assignment instructions and completed work will be posted to Canvas in a timely manner. Students will be responsible for arriving timely with all necessary items (e.g. homework, pencils, paper). Headphones or earbuds will be helpful for audio and video files. Daily attendance is necessary to maintain the pace of this class. Assignments not completed in class must be finished on the student’s own time and must be turned in by the due date for credit to be earned. Late work after the “semester” ending date will not be accepted. If, at the end of the three weeks the student has not completed sufficient work to earn a passing grade of 70, the semester must be repeated.

Rules of Conduct:

Students will be held accountable for all GPISD and Crosswinds rules as outlined in the student code of conduct and the electronic code of conduct.

Grading Policy:

Written assignments must satisfy my and GPISD’s minimum passing standards and the provided classroom rubric. Work not meeting the minimum standard must be revised until a passing grade is earned.

I aim to produce educated and productive citizens who are always eager to grow and learn throughout their lives. As Neil Peart once wrote: “In a world where I feel so small, I can’t stop thinking big!” -Mr. Ashford
